Wallace sat munching on dry bread. There was no meat to be had, and if there had been, he would have spared it for Campbell, nursing another wound and in need of as much nourishment as he could get. His thoughts meandered, his mouth starving for a different banquet.

"William!" Campbell barked, passing a pitcher of goat's milk. "Ye need your strength, lad."

Nodding, Wallace took a dutiful swallow from the jug, the thick, curdled stuff sour on his tongue.

His mouth twisted and he spat. This cream did not have the taste he craved.

That of Robert the Bruce.
